Introductory CoursesSICA-FICA has a range of Courses introducing the various processes available for resolving commercial disputes. For example, there are four training courses which have been prepared as INTRODUCTIONS TO INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION. Since many venues are today considering setting up centres for appointing arbitrators and administering arbitrations, it is generally recommended that the first course to be run is the "Commercial Access to Commercial Justice" Course as it explains the basic concepts of arbitration and explores both the necessary legal framework and practicalities for setting up an Arbitration Centre. The other three Courses concentrate on different aspects of the arbitral process, relevant to the requirements of those attending.
- PART I: "Commercial access to commercial justice"is usually a 2˝-day course as a general introduction, explaining the basic culture of the arbitration process and then considering what rôle the local venue could play in its promotion. Emphasis is placed on the Agreement to arbitrate and the resulting Award, and consideration is given to the setting up of an Arbitration Centre locally, what arbitration rules it might apply and what legal background would be most appropriate for it to flourish.
PART II: "The essential process of Arbitration" is usually a 2˝-day general introduction to the process in the context of the UNCITRAL Model Law and local law. This course is designed to provide a foundation in the principles of arbitration and would inform and assist those considering new arbitration legislation.
PART III: "From Agreement to Award" is usually a 3-day foundation course, primarily for lawyers and potential arbitrators.
PART IV: "Choosing your private judge and forum" is usually a 3-day course, primarily for users and other, similarly interested parties.
